Translation

In the scriptures, the Lord is addressed with three principal namesOm (omnipresent), Tat (one who is known indirectly, through the Vedas)
and Sat (full of infinite auspicious attributes). The Lord made available the
Vedas and Vedic sacrifices and powered the intellect of priests to perform
them.

Hence, the activities of ritual sacrifice, austerity, and charity
performed as per the scriptures are always initiated by invoking the
primordial syllable ‘Om’, as a prayer to the Lord Almighty.

Those desirous of achieving eternal bliss and not interested in
temporary heavenly pleasures perform sacrifices, penances, and charity as
an offering to the Lord described by the word ‘Tat’, as one who is to be
understood indirectly (through the scriptures).

O Partha! The Lord’s name, ‘Sat’, is used to represent existence and
goodness. It is also used to denote auspicious activities.

The strong conviction that one has in performing sacrifices, penances
and charity is also represented by the Lord’s name ‘Sat’, as also activities
that are performed as an offering to the Lord.

Unfiltered First Take

The key to running a successful business is define, detach, and dedicate.

Define. This is the most important step in the life of an entrepreneur. Defining the purpose, goal, and vision clearly at the beginning of the business is crucial, as the entire system, people, planning, and execution must align with this from the start. Realignment is possible, but it can be a costly process, and not every business can afford it. Hence, the clearer the purpose and saner the goal, the better it is for everyone.

The second step is detach. Make up the mind that you are here to put in your best effort, and the fruits of actions are not fully in our hands, as many external factors also play a role. With detachment comes the ability to view progress and problems objectively and move ahead on the path of entrepreneurship.

Then comes dedication. Keep moving on the path of entrepreneurship even when facing difficulties, losses, and distress. Consistently doing the right things with the right attitude is the key to success.

One should maintain the sanity of actions, mind, and communication, built on these principles.

UdyamGita Interpretation

Krishna concludes Chapter 17 by revealing a powerful triad—Om, Tat, Sat—as eternal symbols of the Supreme Truth.

  • Om represents the sacred beginning—the invocation that aligns action with a higher purpose.
  • Tat signifies detachment—acting without craving rewards, surrendering outcomes.
  • Sat denotes truth, goodness, and steadfastness—that which is real, enduring, and righteous.

Together, they form the inner foundation of all meaningful sacrifice, charity, and discipline. Actions anchored in Om Tat Sat transcend ego and become purposeful, sustainable, and auspicious.

Business Insight

Krishna’s spiritual triad translates seamlessly into a founder’s operating philosophy:

Define. Detach. Dedicate.

This is the hidden architecture of enduring enterprises.

Entrepreneurial failure is rarely due to lack of effort—it often stems from unclear purpose, emotional over-attachment, or inconsistent commitment.

Leadership Lesson

  • Define (Om – Clear Invocation): he first and most critical act of entrepreneurship is definition. Purpose, vision, and goals must be articulated clearly at the very beginning. Every system—people, processes, culture, and strategy—must align to this definition. Realignment is possible, but expensive and disruptive.

The clearer the purpose, the saner the organization.

  • Detach (Tat – Freedom from Outcomes): Once the path is defined, the founder must detach from obsession with outcomes. Results are influenced by many external forces beyond control. Detachment allows leaders to evaluate progress objectively, respond to problems rationally, and avoid emotional volatility.

Detachment does not reduce effort—it sharpens judgment.

  • Dedicate (Sat – Steadfast Goodness): Dedication is staying the course—through losses, delays, criticism, and uncertainty—while continuing to do the right things with the right attitude. Consistency of action, purity of intent, and steadiness of mind define true entrepreneurial resilience.

Dedication converts intention into legacy.

When actions, thoughts, and communication are built on these three principles, sanity becomes the organization’s default state.

Key Takeaways

  • Great businesses begin with clear definition of purpose and vision.
  • Detachment enables objective decision-making amid uncertainty.
  • Dedication sustains momentum through hardship and delay.
  • Om aligns intent, Tat frees the mind, Sat ensures consistency.
  • Entrepreneurial success is spiritual discipline applied to execution.
