Chapter 17 - Verse 28
अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत् |
असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह || 28||

Translation

O Partha! Sacrifices performed, charity given, and austerities
observed, if done without faith and devotion to the Lord will be
counterproductive and constitute ‘Asat’. Such activities help neither here
nor hereafter.

Unfiltered First Take

Any action, any amount of sacrifice, hard work, or good deed, if done without faith in the business goal, cannot lead to success. Having strong belief in the business can personally transform the entrepreneur, and thus he becomes a tool for the transformation of the system and people he has envisioned.

But if there is even the slightest doubt, it becomes equally difficult to align everyone and everything toward a single goal, and this ultimately leads to the collapse of the business.

UdyamGita Interpretation

Krishna brings Chapter 17 to a decisive close with a stark declaration.

Any sacrifice, charity, or penance performed without faith is called Asat—unreal, hollow, and ineffective. Such actions bear no fruit, neither in this world nor beyond.

Effort without faith may look impressive on the surface, but it lacks inner truth. Without conviction, action loses its power to transform.

Business Insight

This verse strikes at the very heart of entrepreneurship.

No amount of:

  • hard work,
  • sacrifice,
  • long hours,
  • or even “good deeds”

can compensate for lack of faith in the business vision.

Entrepreneurship is uncertain by nature. Markets fluctuate, people change, and outcomes remain unpredictable. The only stabilizing force is the founder’s unshakeable belief in the goal they are pursuing.

Without faith, effort becomes mechanical. With faith, effort becomes transformational.

Leadership Lesson

  • When an entrepreneur has deep conviction, they themselves get transformed first. Their clarity, confidence, and resilience turn them into a living example of the vision.
  • This inner transformation allows the entrepreneur to become a tool for systemic change—aligning people, processes, and culture toward a single direction
  • But even a slight doubt at the core creates cracks. Teams sense hesitation. Alignment weakens. Decisions lose coherence. Gradually, the system drifts—and eventually collapses.

Faith is not blind optimism. It is commitment without inner contradiction.

Key Takeaways

  • Effort without faith is Asat—empty and ineffective.
  • Faith gives meaning, direction, and endurance to hard work.
  • A founder’s belief precedes team alignment and system coherence.
  • Doubt at the center multiplies confusion at the edges.
  • Strong conviction transforms the entrepreneur before it transforms the business.
